"NO SEX - A World of Gender" looks at both the individual's own as well as society's expectations of gender and sexuality.
Thursday 11th April 2019 @ 19h00 Studio Theatre/Dance Campus
On display in a clinically white box are 4 bodies - 4 creatures - 4 people – 4 individuals. In this box, they take on a journey through a series of scenarios where they exaggerate, exhibit, accept and fight against confirmative and non-confirmative notions of gender and sexuality. They are both alone and united at the same time. Confused and in and out of love. With militaristic precision they go with the flow of mainstream to eventually seek out of and in chaos fight against it, but maybe never to break to free.
By working with oppositions such as irony and sincerity, precision and chaos, the piece challenges the many ideas and norms of gender and sexuality that lead to inaccurate assumptions of what it means to be a man or woman, what love is or the many "fashionable" ideas that can be harmful and hostile.
In Jason Mabana's distinctive choreographic language, vision and thorough direction, the dancers have been given and found their place. The piece is the result of close collaboration between the choreographer, the dancers and the rest of the artistic team.
Jason Mabana is a Belgian/Philippian and is based in London, where he also studied dances at the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance. He has among other been dancing for Akram Khan, in Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company, Wayne McGregor Dance Company and Candoco Dance Company.
In 2016, Jason got his first exposure as a choreographer through the BBC Young Artists program, to which he created two well-received pieces.
In 2017 he choreographed "Requiem for Aleppo", directed by David Cazalet, which premiered on Sadler Well´s main stage. The performance was nominated for the Amnesty International Freedom of Speech Awards and the Asian Arts Awards. The production raised more than £ 100,000 to the charities focused on Syria relief and refugees. In the same year, Jason was chosen as one of the top 10 British young artists through United Kingdom Young Artists. In 2018, Jason created the duet MaMa together with Panos Malactos, which premiered at DanceWaves Cyprus. In December he will be premiere, for the first time with his own company, with the piece "Kahinaan".
