Guest Lecture: Prof. Richard Shusterman

The CTDPS is pleased to host Prof. Richard Shusterman, Florida Atlantic University, as he presents his lecture: “Somaesthetics and Performance: The Adventures of the Man in Gold”

In this presentation, Prof. Shusterman will begin by outlining the field of somaesthetics and explaining its philosophical roots. He will then illustrate how somaesthetics has been embodied in performance that integrates the fields of philosophy and art. The case study referenced is the performances relating to The Adventures of the Man in Gold, a philosophical tale based on performance art he has been doing since 2010 in collaboration with the Parisian artist Yann Toma.

Prof. Shusterman is the Dorothy F. Schmidt Eminent Scholar in the Humanities and Director of the Center for Body, Mind, and Culture at Florida Atlantic University.

Prof. Shusterman's major authored books include Thinking Through the Body; Body Consciousness; Surface and Depth; Performing Live; Practicing Philosophy; and Pragmatist Aesthetics (now published in fifteen languages). Prof. Shusterman received his doctorate in philosophy from Oxford and has held academic appointments in France, Germany, Israel, and Japan. The French government honored him as a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques, and he was awarded research grants from the NEH, Fulbright Commission, ACLS, Humboldt Foundation, and UNESCO.
