Mbongeni Mtshali

Lecturer 

Mbongeni is a practising multimedia artist who uses movement, live and digital performance in both conventional and site-specific spaces to investigate concepts of social justice, identity and belonging.  Mbongeni has both directed and performed in work shown at theatres and festivals in Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Chicago, generously supported by the Buffet Foundation, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, the South African National Arts Council, and the Victory Gardens Theatre among others.

Mbongeni completed his BA, BA(Hons) and MA in Theatre and Performance Studies with concentrations in Dance/Movement Theory, Composition & Performance; and Directing & Design for Puppetry, Object & Physical Theatre.  He is a Fulbright Scholar and doctoral candidate in Performance Studies at Northwestern University, where his research currently focuses on black queer and feminist performance in post-apartheid South Africa.
